Macronutrients and Micronutrients

Image
Macronutrients and Micronutrients There are three main macronutrients, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and we require these nutrients in large amounts to grow, develop, repair and for us to feel good overall. These macronutrients are food in all foods. Let’s say you eat whole eggs you have 62% of fat that is the good fat and the rest being from the protein and carbohydrates. The sources of macronutrients come from nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, beans ,legumes, greens, apples, bananas and brown rice to name a few. Fats help with absorbing vitamins, development of the brain, functioning of the cells, and protects the organs.  Proteins repairs and regenerates the body tissue and cell, it helps with a healthy immune system and process hormones. Carbs are used as our bodies main source of energy. Micronutrients are found in nutrients and can be introduced to the body through different ones. Iron is one nutrient that we get and it helps transport oxygen from our lungs to ...

Digestion

Image
The digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the macronutrients goes like this for carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; The mouth starts the digestion of the Carbohydrate breakdown. The salivary glands contain a starch digesting enzyme, the liver helps with digesting fats by manufacturing bile, the gallbladder then helps with keeping the bile in place until it is needed, the bile duct moves bile to the small intestines, and the pancreatic duct produces juices for the small intestines, and then the pancreas gathers the enzymes to digest all the energy yielding nutrients. The salivary glands that are in the mouth secrete saliva which then moistens the food that is chewed. The salivary glands release enzymes called amylase which starts the process of breaking down the polysaccharides in the carbohydrate food. The digestion for protein starts in the stomach and the duodenum through the enzymes pepsin that is comes from the stomach, and  then trypsin and chymotrypsin that is...

Nutrition through the Lifecycle

Image
Pregnancy (Nutrition and Dietary Guidelines)- A woman should be well nourished at the very beginning of pregnancy because the embryo grows rapidly. She must increase her nutrients such as energy, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The recommendation of extra calories a woman should get during pregnancy are 340 calories during the second trimester and 450 during the third. If they choose nutrient dense foods from each food group readily available to them then they can meet these extra calorie requirements. Getting about 175 grams of carbs from whole grain breads and cereals and other healthy carbs will help brain and fetal growth. A number of important vitamins are needed to help with cell growth of the fetus. Infancy (Nutrition and Dietary Guidelines)- After the pregnancy is over and the infant arrives it is time to focus on their specific nutrition as well. Since an infant's growth and metabolism rates are rapid then they require an ample amount of nutrients, They requi...

Social, Psychological, Philosophical, and Physical Nutrition

Image
Social, Psychological, Philosophical, and Physical Nutrition On the level of food we can allow it to consume our lives in more than just gaining weight. It is also intertwined with us socially, psychologically, philosophically, and physically. “Food consumption is incontrovertibly linked with public health outcomes ranging from obesity to cardiovascular disease and diabetes." (Pachucki, Jacques, & Christakis,2011) Socially when we sit down with others to enjoy a meal we can be influenced by the choices others make. How many times have we sat at the dinner table when we are out to eat, and watch what others have, and say “hey I want that?” I would have to say a lot. Even their is not a lot of research to prove the relationship between patterns of food consumption and human connectedness does not mean that it does not exist. According to Pachucki, et.al they say that when entering into a new relationship you tend to ingest more fruits and vegetables and consuming ...

Diet Modification Plan

“An unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption are the most important behavioral risk factors and are responsible for approximately 80 % of cases of CHD and cerebrovascular disease.” (Veiga Jardim, Lima Sousa,  Rolim Povoa, Sebba Barroso, Sebba Barroso, Jardim, Jardim, P, 2015) I have been unhealthy for a long time, and I am at risk for heart disease, and stroke. It’s time to make a change. I never really struggled with weight while I was young. It was not until I went to college and gained more than the freshman 15. I decided campus food was not good enough for so I needed to eat Captain D’s and Krystal’s every chance I got. I felt miserable, but didn’t think I overweight. It wasn’t until I came home and everyone said boy you sure are big (swallowing hard) I was like that’s not nice. I then got a complex and felt it necessary to try quick fixes while almost killing myself. I embarked on taking Phen Phen and laxatives on a daily basis and...

Nutrition and Disease Connection

Image
Nutrition and Disease Connection  “Nutrition is defined as the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism.” Nutrition. (n.d.) The foods we consume on a daily basis can either be healthy for us or they can harm us by causing a number of diseases. Cardiovascular disease is the number killer in America, and this is mainly because of an unbalanced diet, and lack of physical activity. Heart disease and stroke are two of the main forms dealing with cardiovascular disease. Ways to prevent this from occurring is by reducing your intake of saturated and trans fats, and getting enough fruits and vegetables. Cancer is another disease leading the way to death and disability, and again diet is a big contributor. Prevention of cancers is more preferable than having to beat it. It is important to consume a diet high in fruit and vegetables which can help preven...

My Journey

Image
Hello my good peeps! I am back at again, and determined to get healthy again. I have been successful so many times at losing weight and keeping it off, but lately it has been a little more difficult. In December of 2015 I learned that I had hypothyroidism after never having an issue with this before, and definitely not a family history of it to my knowledge. I was a bit worried because I had read up on the issues that this disease could cause, and being that I wanted another baby I was not happy that it could cause infertility. I had to redo my blood test to check my TSH levels I was put on 50mcg of Levothyroxine, and it kept things leveled out.      After being on medicine for almost a year I was thrilled to find out that I was expecting my second child. Though it was exciting, I was still worried because there was so many things that could go wrong, but thank God all was well. We welcomed a healthy baby girl into the world, and couldn't be more happy. I ...
